Cryptivity CPS

Imagine teaching creative problem solving skills, but in an exciting and engaging format-- an escape room scenario!

My goal is to engage students in developing creative problem solving (CPS) skills in a way that is in and of itself creative, rather than merely presenting the skills in a lecture.

My goal is to engage students in developing creative problem solving (CPS) skills in a way that is in and of itself creative, rather than merely presenting the skills in a typical classroom style lecture.

Highlights

The original iteration of the workshop is called, “Message from the Future.”  At the beginning of the presentation I begin a slide show about CPS, that is rapidly interrupted by a static-filled video appearing on the screen.  As the image resolves, students see a person, obviously disguised, who claims to be sending a signal through a worm-hole from the future.  In this future, the world has become bleak and troubled because creativity has dried up and no one can come up with solutions to big problems such as famine, war and climate change.  Students are asked to search the classroom for a package that was ‘transported through the wormhole.’

They discover a (previously) hidden box that contains exercises to strengthen their creativity in the hopes that they will then grow up to be creative problem solvers and ‘change the future for the better.’  Further messages interrupt other sections of the workshop to advance the plot and provide a hopeful resolution.

A second version of the encounter providing called “Secret Government Agents” is also available, with more coming soon, including “Alien Encounter”, “Viral Apocalypse”, and “Evil Super-Villain”.
